Badgers and their setts are protected by law and therefore need to be considered during development/land management projects.
Blackdown Environmental have expertise in undertaking surveys for badgers and devising and implementing effective and innovative mitigation solutions which have assisted projects including road and rail schemes as well as major housing developments.
About the Badger
An iconic symbol of the British countryside, the badger is a very common sight in Britain, with around 280,000 living in the UK. Distribution of the badger is uneven across the country, with a dense population in the south of England. Badgers live in underground burrows, called setts, in groups of between 4 and 12.
Individual badgers and their setts are protected under the Protection of Badgers Act 1992, which makes it illegal to kill, injure or to take a badger (or attempt to do so) or to interfere with a badger sett. Badgers are also protected under Schedule 6 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 (as amended) in England, Scotland and Wales.
Failure to comply with the law can lead to fines of up to £5,000 per offense and a potential prison sentence of up to six-months Therefore it is important to contact an expert for advice in the first instance.
When searching and looking for signs of badgers you would expect to see sett entrances/holes (these are oval and measure between 250 to 300mm wide), badger paths, footprints (five toes with very distinctive claw marks at the end), badger hairs, scratching posts and evidence of bangers digging for food.
